What is Art Therapy?

Art therapy is based on the belief that the creative process of art making is healing and life-enhancing. The integration of the visual arts into psychotherapy, under the guidance and support of a trained art therapist, allows individuals to build skills for coping, express difficult emotional experiences, better manage anxiety and stress, process traumatic experiences, enhance cognitive abilities, increase self-esteem and awareness.

Art therapists work with individuals of all ages, in a variety of settings, and with a variety of patient populations. Art therapy can benefit children, adolescents, and adults, in such settings as schools, hospitals, community mental health agencies, and private practice. Sessions take place on an individual, family, or group basis, and are tailored to the needs of each participant. You do not need to be an artist to benefit from art therapy; it is a creative approach to treatment that can be adapted to benefit people of all ages.

Art therapists are mental health professionals with Master's-level education in psychology, human development, counseling theory and technique, as well as the visual arts. Art therapists who meet educational, professional experience, and examination requirements can become licensed psychotherapists in New York State through the Office of the Professions. Art therapists can also become registered and board-certified by the Art Therapy Credentials Board, which outlines ethical guidelines and standards for the competent, safe practice of art therapy nationally.

WNYATA is one of three chapters in New York State, an affiliate of our larger professional association, the American Art Therapy Association (AATA). AATA's mission is to advocate for the expansion of access to professional art therapists and lead the nation in the advancement of art therapy as a regulated mental health and human services profession. If you are a practicing art therapist, student, educator, or other mental health professional interested in membership, please contact us today!
